The August 2012 edition of the S&P/Experian Consumer Credit Default Indices showed that bankcard, first-mortgage and second-mortgage default rates hit new post recession lows. The first mortgage default rate decreased slightly, from 1.41 percent in July to 1.40 percent in August, and has been down or flat for eight consecutive months. The second-mortgage default rate fell to the lowest in its eight-plus-year history, reaching 0.72 percent. Bankcard default rates fell the most in August, from July's 3.83 percent to 3.77 percent, the lowest rate in five years. In Experian's recent State of Credit study which analyzes credit scores in more than 100 cities, Minneapolis took the number one spot, with an average VantageScore® credit score of 787. The Midwest dominated the top 10 spots in the rankings and Wisconsin consumers continue to demonstrate their credit savvy, with four of the state's metropolitan areas making the top 10 list for the second year in a row. The average bankcard balance per consumer in Q2 2012 was $4,170, which is 4 percent higher when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. VantageScore A and VantageScore B tiers (super prime and prime) saw bankcard balances increase by 31 percent and 11 percent respectively, while all other VantageScore® tiers experienced annual balance decreases during the same timeframe. The Experian/Moody's Analytics Small Business Credit Index edged up 0.9 points in Q2 2012, to 104.1 from 103.2. High-level findings from the Q2 report show that credit quality will be slow to improve in coming months, and threats to consumer confidence and spending have become more prominent. Business confidence is in line with an economy growing below potential. This factor could affect hiring through the rest of the year, postponing the emergence of a strong, consumer-led recovery. A recent survey of 1,000 representative American consumers showed that while 78 percent of respondents are aware that they have more than one credit score, some key misperceptions remain: • Fewer than half (44 percent) understand that a credit score typically measures risk of not repaying loans rather than amount of debt (22 percent), financial resources (21 percent) or other factors. • More than half still think that a person's age (56 percent) and marital status (54 percent) are factors used to calculate credit scores, and 21 percent incorrectly believe that ethnic origin is a factor. As part of its expanded guidance, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency explicitly recommends that financial services firms utilizing predictive models and decision analytics run regular validations to gauge model efficacy. The VantageScore® credit score model was recently measured against the best credit score models from each of the three largest credit reporting companies (CRCs). When comparing KS values, there is exceptionally strong performance for mortgage originations, with the VantageScore® credit score model outperforming the CRC models in a range from 8 percent to 12 percent. A vintage analysis comparing 60 or more days past due (DPD) delinquency performance at the one-year mark for mortgages originated between 2002 and 2010 shows that 2010 outperformed previous years, with a delinquency rate of 0.37 percent. The worst- performing vintage was 2006, with a 60 or more DPD delinquency rate of 3.84 percent – more than 10 times the delinquency rate of 2010. The economy is accelerating at a sluggish pace, and world headlines cause business leaders to swing between optimism and pessimism daily. Risk managers must look more closely and much more frequently at their customers' behavior to stay ahead of emerging credit problems. Some tips: Use all customer information when making decisions. Combining both internal and external data can paint a clearer picture of your customers. Identify the customer relationships that have value and should be retained. Apply resources accordingly. Implement daily triggers so you have the latest customer information around bankruptcy, repossession or loan delinquency, as well as positive information such as payments made to other financial institutions. Spend more time examining consumers who are delinquent on their home mortgage payments to determine their behavior on your portfolio. Use next-generation collections software to keep collectors up to date on account-level strategies.
